The cinematography, lighting, and score were fan-fucking-tastic. Really great stuff. Everything else? Eh? Not so much. Simply put I thought the movie had terrific atmosphere but muddled storytelling and themes, as well as rather funky pacing. People said it was a slow burn, but I feel like the point of a slow burn is to, well, start slowly then amp up in the final act. Gretel & Hansel kinda went the opposite way: the pacing got slower the longer it went, which I found odd. The most exciting stuff happened in the first 20 minutes. Overall I'm glad I saw it though. It seemed rather audacious for a wide-release horror flick. I'd be curious what Jay thought of it, since I know he loved The Blackcoat's Daughter, a movie I can't say I share his enthusiasm for. Wouldn't surprise me if he really loved this one too.

Level 1 I'm honestly surprised it's PG-13, the tone the trailer gave off definitely felt like it was going for R level 2 The last time we get a PG-13 horror movie with an R-Rated soul was Insidious or Drag Me to Hell (or even Split, for that matter). Any new spin on Hansel & Gretel is something I would likely watch. I love the classic stories and fairy tales based on witches and the like. level 2 I really enjoyed most of The Blackcoat's Daughter. It had a wonderfully cozy atmosphere -- the snowy boarding school, the softly lit dorms, the nurses' home where they would have dinner -- which made the contrast of the horror scenes that much more effective. The scene where Kiernan Shipke's character is praying to the furnace was fucking chilling. But I hated the decision to have Kiernan Shipke and Emma Roberts both play the same character. It just didn't work for me at all, it took me out of the movie completely. It's the kind of reveal that only works well in a book where you can't see the characters. I'm still really excited for Gretel & Hansel since I love arthouse horror, and Perkins is still great at crafting atmosphere, tension and dread. level 1 Nein!
